... is named after the district of Liverpool in which it was founded in 1885 as a teacher training college for women. In 1931, having outgrown its city surroundings, it was handed over to the Lancashire Education Committee and relocated to its present campus in Ormskirk. It admitted its first male students in 1959, and was granted University status in 2006.
Edge Hill College was evacuated to Bingley, Yorkshire, during World War II. Its original premises in Durning Road, Edge Hill, were destroyed by enemy bombs during the Liverpool Blitz in November 1940. An air–raid shelter in Durning Road was destroyed in the same raid, causing 166 fatalities. Winston Churchill described this as the "single worst incident of the war".
